The Medical Dental Interface in Eating Disorders

Eating disorders have been discussed in both the popular media and professional journals for many decades and the prevalence of anorexia has been calculated around 0.3% in young females and 1.0% for bulimia. This represents an estimated incidence of 8 and 13 cases per 100,000 per year respectively.  Although many dental journals describe the oral features of bulimia there are many issues that will complicate patient management for the dentist. These relate to patient secrecy, differential diagnosis, potentially fatal medical complications, depression and substance abuse.

This lecture will outline the pathophysiology of eating disorders and the many challenges that confront the dentist between provisional diagnosis and the implementation of an effective treatment plan.

Topics covered:
•    The physical signs of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa
•    The oro-facial manifestations of anorexia and bulimia nervosa
•    The dental findings in eating disorders and their differential diagnosis
•    The concurrent barriers to history-taking and the effects of associated psychiatric disturbances.
•    Outline of dental management of affected teeth.

Recommended for…Dentists, Dental Hygienists, Nutritionists and Diet Counselors.
