5th Annual Alan J. Drinnan Memorial Symposium What’s it really like being a Forensic Dentist Alumni Speaker Series Friday, October 23, 2009 8:30am-11:30am (3 CE credits) An increase in the fascination and the expectations of forensic science has occurred in recent years. The field of Forensic Odontology has proven to be no exception to this. This program will provide the participant with an idea of what the forensic dentist really does and the difficulties getting started in the field. A brief history behind the profession and recent developments in the discipline will be discussed. Actual forensic dental cases and the stories behind them will be presented. Topics Covered:

Nawrocki, DDS, MA, DABFO received her BA degree from Cornell University in 1976 and her MA in Human Anatomy and Histology from SUNY Buffalo in1981. Her interest in forensic dentistry began as a dental student at the SUNY at Buffalo School of Dentistry when she took a course given by Dr. Stuart Fischman and lectures from Dr. Alan Drinnan. Dr. Nawrocki pursued the study of Forensic Odontology under the mentorship of Dr. B.K. Friedman beginning with the establishment of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Mass Disaster Team in 1991. The team responded to the TWA Flight 800 Tragedy in 1996. She continues to serve as a Forensic Dental Consultant for the Suffolk County Medical Examiners. Dr. Nawrocki is a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Odontology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and has served as a member of the Board of Governors and Secretary of the American Society of Forensic Sciences. Dr. Nawrocki has co-presented several presentations at the AAFS annual meetings and has lectured on forensic odontology to various organizations. She has coauthored papers addressing bitemark recognition and mass disasters. Dr. Nawrocki has been a member of DMORT (Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team) Region 2 since 1997 and was deployed to the World Trade Center. She also volunteered during the American Airlines Flight 587 Crash in November of that year. In 2008 she was awarded The FBI/CJIS Assistant Directors Award for Excellence for Outstanding Public Service on her work on the National Dental Information Repository. |
