The Best Laser for Clinical Dentistry:

Myths, Fallacies vs. Current Science!

Previously Recorded Zoom

Dental lasers have been approved by the FDA since late 1990s and since had a rather checkered history. Driven by marketing hype, there have been unfortunate overreach by commercial interests. The simplicity of it use (point and shoot!) in contrast to the complexity of light-biological tissue interactions has further muddled clinical research efforts.

This course will emphasize our current fundamental understanding of laser clinical applications and outline discrete treatment approaches. A few common myths and fallacies with laser use will be highlighted along with progress in clinical translational efforts for lasers in routine dentistry.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about fundamental laser-biological tissue interactions
  • Appreciate there are multiple, surgical and non-surgical laser clinical treatments
  • Limitations, utility and potential combinations of laser procedures

A major focus of this activity will be to outline the biological rationale for the clinical laser treatment approaches, broadly categorized into surgical and non-surgical treatments.
