Anterior open bite malocclusions
pose significant functional challenges for patients particularly related to their
ability to incise food and to achieve proper speech sound articulations.
Dentists may often be the first healthcare professional to identify the
malocclusion and inform patients of their condition. This presentation will
discuss etiological factors including abnormal tongue posture and airway
restrictions, followed by a review of treatment approaches involving
orthodontics and multidisciplinary approaches. The knowledge gained will be of
value for increasing the awareness of dentists for identifying anterior open
bite malocclusions, informing patients of this condition and providing them
with an overview of potential treatment approaches.
At the completion of the program,
participants should be able to:
- Identify the presence of an anterior open
bite malocclusion
- Have an awareness of etiologic factors that
contribute to anterior open bite malocclusions
- Appreciate the role of tongue posture in
creating the malocclusions
- Gain knowledge of factors such as airway
restrictions that can contribute to abnormal jaw and tongue posture
- Have familiarity with treatment approaches
aimed at correcting anterior open bites, managing the airway and providing long
term stability
