Evidence-based Treatment Approaches to Growth Modification and Orthodontic Biomaterials in

Daily Clinical Practice...Quo vadis?

Friday, June 2, 2023

Westin Buffalo

Morning lecture:

Evidence-based Dentofacial Orthopedics and Growth Modification for Class II and III Skeletal Malocclusions

Functional appliance therapy has a long history of over a century in the successful treatment of Class II malocculsions in growing children. However, agreement does not exist on the contribution of skeletal and dentoalveolar correction achieved, nor the long-tern ability to maintain the treatment effects. Early treatment of developing Class III malocclusions has been shown to be successful in mild to moderate skeletal cases and maxillary protraction is more supported than mandibular growth inhibition, due to concerns with a negative influence on the TMJ.

Learning objectives:

  • Review early intervention treatment timing, Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs) and Systematic Reviews related to an evidence-based clinical approach to Growth Modification, by reviewing patients treated with Functional Appliance Therapy and their long-term follow-up
  • Clinical treatment by an experienced clinician taking all treatment options into account, should never be allowed to be tyrannized by “the evidence”
  • Patients are all “individuals” who don’t always conform to norms, averages, statistics and RCTs, requiring individualist considerations for every patient
  • Highlight the many advantages of Growth Modification and the patients who will benefit

Afternoon lecture:

Orthodontic Biomaterials: Evidence-based preventive, interceptive and every-day practice considerations for the clinician in a modern orthodontic office

Decalcification and the development of unsightly white-spot lesions, is and remains, one of the most vexing problems facing orthodontists in their day-to-day clinical specialty practises. It is also one of the main reasons for orthodontists being sued by patients and parents. In addition, there are many biomaterials to choose from for bonding and banding in orthodontics with a host of considerations for efficiency, effectiveness, reliability and safety.

Learning objectives:

  • This lecture will focus on strategies in the prevention, identification and treatment of cariogenic lesion development in everyday orthodontic practise
  • The latest developments related to adhesivity, orthodontic bond strength reliability, iatrogenic considerations, bonding to compromised and fluorosed enamel, porcelain, composite, amalgam and gold will be addressed.
  • Allergenicity and toxicity will also be reviewed
