The Oral Cancer Paradigm:
Concepts & Perspectives for the Oral Health Professional

Previously Recorded

Oral cancer remains the sixth most prevalent cancer worldwide, accounting for 377,000 new cases and 177,000 deaths in 2020 globally. In the United States, oral cancer accounts for 3% of all cancers diagnosed per year with little to no change in overall survival over the past 20+ years. Studies have shown that timing is paramount in diagnosis and treatment by which patients who receive an early diagnosis and treatment have a greater likelihood of overall survival. The early diagnosis of head and neck cancer begins with the proverbial "Physicians of the mouth," the Dentist. The comfort and familiarity of the dental practitioner on oral cancer is paramount to success. This course aims to familiarize and reorient the dental practitioner to head and neck cancer from diagnosis through treatment to survival.

At the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Define risk factors associated with head and neck cancer
  • Identify clinical manifestations of benign and malignant oral conditions
  • Describe the short and long-term oral sequelae associated with head and neck cancer treatment
  • Implement research-proven recommendations for cancer prevention in the general dental setting
