Current Concepts in Periodontal Disease

Over the past decade, a growing body of evidence suggests that poor oral health can affect our overall health and well-being. An increasing number of systemic diseases have been associated with poor oral health, especially periodontal inflammation and infection. Different approaches have been used to both prevent the development of and to treat ongoing periodontal disease.  This presentation will review some recent evidence linking poor oral health with systemic health and evaluate approaches to periodontal treatment.

Robert E. Schifferle, DDS, MMSc, PhD Associate Professor, Departments of Periodontology and Oral Biology, University at Buffalo. Major research interests involves the characterization of virulence factors of bacteria associated with periodontal disease.
